The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in European Union Law and International Relations, JMCE, at the University of Deusto comprises the activities carried out by a large number of research teams in the Faculty of Law.

One of the most relevant actions scheduled for the 2013-2015 period are two research projects that are described in the following sections.

Building a European Demos: democratic legitimacy in the post-Lisbon European Union and its impact on global governance

  • Main researcher: Beatriz Pérez de las Heras
  • Research team: European Integration
  • Other participants: Researchers from the Universities of Florida and Indiana (USA), Wroclaw (Poland), Riga (Estonia) and Seville. 
  • Overall goal of the project:
    • Analyse the instruments of participatory democracy and citizen involvement introduced by the Lisbon Treaty to assess its contribution in terms of European identity
    • evaluate the impact these tools on other international actors and organisations.
